NDIS and the Role of Technology for People with a Disability

The Disability Sector is facing enormous changes with the introduction and evolution of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). The shift is quite radical, involving moving from eight State/Territory based funding schemes that have often been fragmented, to a national, uniform approach, based on insurance principles, designed to be more equitable. The focus is to a person-centred approach, with individualised funding determined on individual needs assessments. The NDIS is designed to build capacity for people living with a disability, to meet their goals and aspirations, using their strengths and supports, also to optimise social and economic independence and promote full participation in the community as much as possible. It is about providing choice and control for the individual disabled person /carer regarding the type of support the disabled person receives and who delivers it.

Recently, agreements have been signed with the Federal Government for state-wide roll-outs of NDIS in both Victoria and NSW by 2019. The roll-out will be staged and controlled, in line with the processes developed in the recent trial sites and will commence from 1st July 2016.

Disability providers can gain valuable insights into the industry’s new directions at the forthcoming New World Conference and Trade Show: Disability in the 21st Century being hosted by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) at the Brisbane Conference and Exhibition Centre 27-29th October 2015. Delegates can make valuable connections and view ways to maximise the latest technology to deliver the scheme and improve the quality of life for people living with a disability.
